Seems like there are an awful lot of music awards shows out there, and it's tough for one of them to stand out as something distinct from the rest. As a working reviewer who does know from jidai-geki (it's much less fun to call them Japanese period films, isn't it?), Bergan's essay strikes me as a maddening defense of ivory-tower double - talk.
